Social investment, or impact investment, is putting money into a project, business or initiative with the purpose of advancing a socially relevant goal as well as generating a financial return for the investor. In social investment, there is an expectation of financial return for investors, but it takes second place to the social goal. This might look like a ROI that takes longer than usual or that is lower than those in traditional investing markets. Investors agree to these terms as they value the social goal and understand how such a goal will have a positive impact on their, and everyone’s, financial success in the long term.
